The “Sleepover for Syria” was an interactive experience designed to help students understand the plight of the Syrian people and the humanitarian crisis that exists in that country. While it is impossible to fully grasp what being a refugee means, the goal of the sleepover was to to appreciate the plight of exiles all over the world, and to raise money for relief efforts for Syrian refugee camps. Participants heard speakers and took part in interactive learning activities. Each student was asked to raise at least $25 in pledges that will be donated to the International Rescue Committee's Syrian Relief Fund. Our thanks go out to our guest speakers, Syrian dissident Ammar Abdulhamid; student activist Jordan Hattar, and the kids of the Career International Academy in Nepal, all of whom we connected to via Skype. See the magic moment at the end of the evening where our students were connecting with our sister school in Nepal, singing a Taylor Swift song together via Skype!
