The “Walkathon for Syria” was an interactive experience designed to help students understand the plight of the Syrian people and the humanitarian crisis that exists in that country. While it is impossible to fully grasp what being a refugee means, the goal of the Walkathon is to appreciate the plight of exiles all over the world and to raise money for relief efforts for Syrian refugee camps. Each participant was asked to walk 3 miles and to raise at least $20 that will be donated to the International Rescue Committee's Syrian Relief Fund. Additionally, each was asked bring a pair of gently used shoes in that were donated to Planet Aid. Before walking, the students learned about the crisis in Syria, the rise of ISIS, and the intense challenges of Syrian families have, including watching recent video of many walking across the desert.
